A characteristic cultural tourism product
In the mountainous regions, people know by heart the saying: “Girls know how to weave fabric, boys know how to knit nets”. Embroidery and weaving are the measure of dexterity and virtue for a girl reaching marriageable age. Under their soft hands, threads transform into multicolored patterns, reflecting concepts of the universe, yin-yang philosophy, and a deep love for nature.
The main materials making up Northwest brocade are usually cotton or fibers harvested from forest trees (Antiaris bark, flax bark). The special feature attracting tourists is the completely natural dyeing technique. Black from indigo leaves or young mud, reddish-brown from forest tree bark, or unique green from stream snail shells burnt into lime mixed with krum leaves…
Unlike the technique of creating patterns while weaving threads in the Central and Southern regions, Northwest brocade is often pieced together from colored fabric patches before embroidering patterns on top, creating sophistication and distinct layering.

Thai Brocade – A vivid picture of nature
The decorative art of the Thai people is considered the most typical with over 30 types of patterns simulating nature vividly. Thai brocade also carries specific nuances by region: If in Mai Chau (Hoa Binh), colors are often bright and soaring, then in Muong Lo (Yen Bai), colors are warmer, containing deeper thoughtful contemplations.
Muong Brocade – The imprint of bronze drum patterns
For the Muong people, weaving is taught from when girls are just eight or nine. By the full moon age, they are proficient at the loom to weave brilliant Northwest brocade sheets. The most unique feature in Muong costumes is the preservation and reproduction of ancient patterns from Dong Son bronze drums.

The brilliant colors of Dao Brocade
The Dao people are famous for their meticulousness in processing raw materials. From flax plants, they undergo many complex stages: stripping bark, boiling with ash water, boiling with beeswax, then scrubbing with stone to flatten the fabric before embroidering.
The dominant color on Dao brocade is energetic bright red. Their embroidery technique is very delicate, revealing the black or indigo background interchangeably, helping to reduce the glare of primary colors, creating absolute harmony. Each fabric sheet is truly a meticulous work of art, contributing to making the Northwest brocade brand famous.
